RecordX + Google Meet
How it works
Two capture paths cover Google Meet. The Chrome extension records the Meet tab audio - it's your browser doing the recording, nothing joins the call. Calendar auto-join is the alternative: connect Google Calendar, and RecordX dispatches a Recall.ai bot named "RecordX Notetaker" to the meet URL for the events you flag. Both paths land the audio, transcript, summary, and action items in the same Recordings library, usually within a minute of the call ending.
Setup
- Create your RecordX account at recordx.io/register.html. The free tier includes 60 minutes of recording per month.
- Install the RecordX Chrome extension and grant tab capture on first use.
-
Under Settings - Calendars, connect Google Calendar (OAuth scope
calendar.readonly). Meet events with a valid join URL show up in the upcoming list. - Turn on auto-join for the events you want covered without your presence, or leave it off and record manually from the extension.
- Join a Google Meet call in Chrome - the extension icon shows a red dot when capture starts. Click to stop, or let the meeting end drop the recording naturally.
- Open RecordX and check Recordings for the transcript, summary, and action items.
Use cases
- Capture every Google Meet call in one searchable library.
- Get a summary and action items after each meeting.
- Search across meetings and calls from a single query.

Permissions
-
Chrome extension:
tabCapture,offscreen,storage,identity,alarms,notifications. Host permission onmeet.google.com. -
Google Calendar OAuth:
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar.readonly. Read-only - RecordX cannot create, edit, or delete calendar events. - No Google Workspace admin install required. Individual users grant access from the RecordX Settings - Calendars screen.
Pricing and limits
- Free plan: 60 minutes per month, shared across extension and bot capture.
- Paid plans and pay-as-you-go top-ups raise the ceiling; see pricing.
- Google Meet itself has a 60-minute cap on the free tier when 3+ participants are on the call - the recording ends when Meet does.
- Bot minutes count against your RecordX quota. Google does not charge extra for a bot participant.
Common gotchas
- "Quick meetings" started from Gmail or the Meet home page have no calendar event. Auto-join can't see them - start the extension manually.
-
Workspace-managed browsers sometimes block
tabCapture. If the extension icon greys out, check the org's extension policy or use calendar auto-join instead. - OAuth refresh tokens issued to a Google account expire when the user's password changes or an admin revokes app access. Reconnect from Settings - Calendars.
- Meet's built-in captions and Gemini's Take Notes for Me both run inside Google. RecordX does not read or replace those - it's a separate recording, not a client of Meet's transcription.
- If a host has "Only invited people can join" on, the bot must be an event guest. Add the RecordX calendar (shown after connect) so the bot has a spot.
Alternatives and adjacent
Google Meet's own recording and Gemini notes are Workspace-only and stay inside Drive - great if your whole org is on one Workspace tenant. RecordX is the cross-tool option: use it when the same team spans Meet, Zoom, Teams, and phone calls and you want one searchable library. Fireflies and Otter also bot into Meet - RecordX is the option that also gives you bot-free extension capture.
Setup checklist
- Register at recordx.io.
- Install the RecordX Chrome extension.
- Connect Google Calendar under Settings - Calendars.
- Turn on auto-join for the events you want covered.
- Join a Meet call in Chrome and verify the extension shows the recording indicator.
- Open Recordings and confirm the transcript arrived.
