RecordX + Zoom
How it works
Two ways to capture a Zoom call. The RecordX Chrome extension records the tab audio while you're in the meeting - nothing joins the participant list, and Zoom itself never knows a recorder is running. If you'd rather not attend, or the call runs on the Zoom desktop client, calendar auto-join dispatches a Recall.ai bot named "RecordX Notetaker" to the Zoom URL and streams audio into the same library. Audio, transcript, summary, and action items land under Recordings within a minute of the call ending.
Setup
- Sign up at recordx.io/register - the free tier gives you 60 minutes per month, no card.
- Install the RecordX Chrome extension from the Web Store. Grant tab capture when the browser prompts on first use.
- Optional but recommended: connect Google Calendar (or Microsoft 365) under Settings - Calendars so the auto-join bot has a schedule to follow.
- Join a Zoom meeting from Chrome ("Join from Your Browser") and click the RecordX extension icon to start recording, or leave auto-join on and let the bot handle it.
- Stop the recording from the extension, or let it end automatically when the meeting closes. Open the Recordings tab in RecordX to see the transcript, summary, and action items.
-
Adjust the extension keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows/Linux, Command+Shift+R on macOS) at
chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
Use cases
- Capture every Zoom meeting in one searchable library, no bot in the room.
- Get an AI summary and action items after each meeting.
- Search across meetings and calls from a single query.

Permissions
-
Chrome extension:
tabCapture, offscreen, storage, identity, alarms, notifications. Host permissions include*.zoom.us. Nothing is uploaded to Zoom's servers - audio streams straight to RecordX storage in eu-central-1. -
Calendar auto-join uses Google Calendar or Microsoft 365 read-only scopes (
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar.readonlyor MicrosoftCalendars.Read) to see event titles, times, and join URLs. - No Zoom Marketplace app is installed - the integration does not touch your Zoom account settings.
Pricing and limits
- Free plan: 60 minutes per month, extension and bot both count against the same balance.
- Paid plans and pay-as-you-go top-ups raise the ceiling; see pricing.
- Bot minutes are billed by RecordX (Recall.ai infrastructure cost is on us). Zoom does not charge extra for a bot participant on the free or paid Zoom tiers.
- Recording length is bounded by the Zoom meeting's own limit (40 minutes on Zoom Basic, no cap on paid Zoom).
Common gotchas
- The extension only captures audio from the active Chrome tab. Muting the Zoom tab in Chrome (right-click - Mute site) silences the recording, too.
- "Join from Your Browser" is hidden by default on some Zoom accounts. Hosts can turn it back on under Settings - In Meeting (Advanced) - Show a "Join from your browser" link.
- The bot needs the Zoom join URL from a calendar event. Meetings that are dial-in only, or shared as a personal room link with no event, can't be auto-joined.
- Zoom breakout rooms: the bot follows the main room. If the host moves it, capture pauses until it returns.
- Recording consent is a local-law question, not a Zoom one. Some jurisdictions (California, Germany) require every participant's consent - one-party-consent states (like Israel) don't. Turn on the in-meeting announcement in RecordX Settings if you want to keep it clean.
Alternatives and adjacent
Zoom's built-in cloud recording produces a video and its own transcript, but keeps the file inside your Zoom account and doesn't cross-link to Meet or Teams calls. Use Zoom cloud recording when you need the video artifact; use RecordX when you want one library that spans Zoom, Meet, Teams, Webex, phone calls, and huddles, with the same summary and action-item engine on every recording. Otter and Fireflies also dispatch bots to Zoom - RecordX is the option that lets you avoid the bot entirely via the extension.
Setup checklist
- Register at recordx.io.
- Install the Chrome extension.
- Connect Google Calendar or Microsoft 365 (optional).
- Turn on calendar auto-join if you want the bot to attend for you.
- Join a Zoom meeting in Chrome and verify capture from the extension icon.
- Open Recordings and confirm the transcript arrived.
