RecordX + Microsoft Teams
How it works
Two capture paths cover Microsoft Teams. The RecordX Chrome extension records the Teams tab audio while you're in the call - nothing joins the roster, and Teams itself never knows a recorder is running. If you'd rather not attend, or the call runs on the Teams desktop app, calendar auto-join dispatches a Recall.ai bot named "RecordX Notetaker" to the meeting URL and streams audio into the same library. Both paths support teams.microsoft.com (Business, Enterprise) and teams.live.com (free, personal). Audio, transcript, summary, and action items land under Recordings within a minute of the call ending.
Setup
- Sign up at recordx.io/register - the free tier gives you 60 minutes per month, no card.
- Install the RecordX Chrome extension from the Web Store. Grant tab capture when the browser prompts on first use.
-
Under Settings - Calendars, connect Microsoft 365 (OAuth scope
Calendars.Read). RecordX picks up Teams events with a valid join URL. - Turn on auto-join for the events you want covered without your presence. Leave it off for call-by-call manual capture.
- Join a Teams call in Chrome ("Continue on this browser" from the join screen) and click the RecordX extension icon to start recording. Verify the red-dot capture indicator.
- Stop the recording or let the call end drop it. Open Recordings in the RecordX web app to see the transcript, summary, and action items.
Use cases
- Capture every Microsoft Teams call in one searchable library.
- Get an AI summary and action items after each call.
- Search across meetings and calls from a single query.

Permissions
-
Chrome extension:
tabCapture,offscreen,storage,identity,alarms,notifications. Host permissions onteams.microsoft.comandteams.live.com. -
Microsoft Graph OAuth:
Calendars.Read. Read-only - RecordX cannot create, modify, or delete calendar events, and never touches chat, files, or channels. - No tenant admin install required for user-level consent. Some organizations require admin consent for any third-party app - if the OAuth screen says "approval needed", ask your IT admin to grant on your behalf.
Pricing and limits
- Free plan: 60 minutes per month, shared across extension and bot capture.
- Paid plans and pay-as-you-go top-ups raise the ceiling; see pricing.
- Bot minutes are billed by RecordX (Recall.ai infrastructure cost is on us). Microsoft does not charge extra for a bot participant.
- Teams itself does not cap meeting length on paid tiers. Teams free has a 60-minute per-meeting limit when 3+ participants are on - the recording ends when Teams does.
Common gotchas
-
Both
teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/...andteams.live.com/meet/...URL shapes are supported. Bare channel or chat links (/l/channel/,/l/chat/) are not meeting URLs and can't be bot-joined. - External-tenant meetings with lobby on: the bot lands in the lobby and needs a participant to admit it. If nobody does within the auto-leave window, it exits and the recording is empty.
- Teams desktop client is Electron, not a browser tab. The extension cannot capture it - use calendar auto-join for anything that runs outside Chrome.
- Teams live events, town halls, and webinars use different join flows and are not always joinable by a bot. Extension capture works when you can watch in Chrome.
-
Org-managed Chrome (via enterprise policy) can block
tabCapture. If the extension icon greys out, check the org's extension policy or fall back to calendar auto-join.
Alternatives and adjacent
Microsoft's Teams Copilot Recap produces its own summary and transcript, but requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license and keeps everything inside the tenant. Use Copilot when your whole org is on one Microsoft tenant with the license attached. Use RecordX when the same team spans Teams, Zoom, Meet, Webex, and phone calls and you want a single searchable library.
Setup checklist
- Register at recordx.io.
- Install the RecordX Chrome extension.
- Connect Microsoft 365 under Settings - Calendars (Calendars.Read).
- Turn on auto-join for the events you want covered.
- Join a Teams call in Chrome and verify the extension shows the recording indicator.
- Open Recordings and confirm the transcript arrived.
