RecordX + WhatsApp (personal)
What it does today
The RecordX WhatsApp integration isn't shipped yet. Today the flow is manual: long-press the WhatsApp voice note, save it to your phone, and upload it to RecordX from the mobile or web app. The planned integration uses WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API) so you can forward a voice note to a RecordX WhatsApp number and receive the transcript back in the same chat.
Setup today
- Sign up for RecordX at recordx.io/register.html.
- Install the RecordX mobile app or open the web app on your phone.
- In WhatsApp, long-press the voice note, tap the share arrow, and choose Save to Files (iOS) or a Save option (Android).
- Upload the file (OGG / Opus) to RecordX from the same phone.
- Wait for the transcript - usually a fraction of the voice-note length.
Setup (once the sync ships)
- Save the RecordX WhatsApp number in your contacts.
- Message /start once and complete the login flow to link your RecordX account.
- Forward voice notes to the number.
- Receive the transcript in the same chat.
Data sync (planned)
| Data | Direction | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Voice notes | WhatsApp → RecordX | OGG / Opus format, up to 30 minutes each. |
| Forwarded audio files | WhatsApp → RecordX | MP3, M4A, WAV supported. |
| Transcript | RecordX → WhatsApp | Sent back as a text message. |
| Summary | RecordX → WhatsApp | Sent as a follow-up message. |
| Text messages | Not synced | The integration only reacts to audio / video. |
| Video calls | Not synced | WhatsApp Business doesn't expose personal video calls to third parties. |
Permissions
The planned integration runs on WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API), which is the officially supported third-party channel. There's no OAuth flow on your side - you message the RecordX WhatsApp number and consent by sending the first message. Linking to your RecordX account is done via a login URL the integration sends back the first time you connect.
Pricing and limits
RecordX doesn't charge for WhatsApp usage - voice notes consume your normal monthly transcription minutes. WhatsApp Business Platform charges per outbound conversation window on RecordX's side; that cost is included in your plan. WhatsApp voice-note limits (30 minutes each) apply. Very long forwarded files use WhatsApp's media-download API which handles multi-part files automatically.
Common gotchas
- Personal-to-personal WhatsApp voice notes are end-to-end encrypted; RecordX can't see them until you save the file and upload, or forward through the Business Platform channel.
- WhatsApp Business Platform 24-hour messaging window: RecordX can reply for 24 hours after your last message; after that, it can only send template messages.
- Group voice notes: forwarding them to the RecordX number transcribes them the same way.
- WhatsApp compresses voice notes aggressively - transcripts are usually good but background music or noisy environments may degrade quality.
Alternatives
- Save-then-upload via the RecordX mobile app - works today.
- WhatsApp Web + download voice note + upload to RecordX web.
- Telegram - same roadmap.
FAQ
- Is the WhatsApp bot live?
- Not yet. Today, save the WhatsApp voice note to your device and upload it to RecordX from the mobile or web app. The planned integration uses WhatsApp Business Platform to receive voice notes forwarded to a RecordX WhatsApp number.
- Why WhatsApp Business, not personal WhatsApp?
- WhatsApp doesn't offer a personal bot API. WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API) is the officially supported way to receive messages, so RecordX will run as a business account you message from your personal WhatsApp.
- Are E2E-encrypted voice notes readable?
- Personal-to-personal WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted; RecordX can't see those. When you save the file and upload it manually, you've decrypted it locally on your phone first. When you forward to the Business Platform number, the transport is protected by WhatsApp's business encryption, not personal E2E.
- How long can voice notes be?
- WhatsApp allows voice notes up to 30 minutes. RecordX handles the resulting OGG / Opus file up to your plan's per-file size limit.
- Does it work for group voice notes?
- You'd need to save the voice note first, then upload. Forwarding a group voice note to the RecordX number, once the Business integration ships, treats it like any other voice message.
